Captain Shubman Gill fell for 37 off 56 balls in the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland, caught by Tom Latham off Nathan Smith, leaving India 114 for 2 in 18.2 overs.
The wicket broke a century stand with Virat Kohli, who had already passed fifty and is still at the crease, after the pair had rebuilt the chase following Rohit Sharma's duck in the first over.
India were 118 for 2 in 18.5 overs, needing 25 more runs to reach the revised target of 143 in 32 overs, after New Zealand were bowled out for 185 earlier in the day.
