Melbourne Stars beat Hobart Hurricanes by 18 runs in their opening match of the new Women's Big Bash League season at Junction Oval in Melbourne on Thursday.
The Stars posted 192 for 4, built on captain Meg Lanning's 71 off 52 balls and Annabel Sutherland's 57 off 36, before Sutherland took 3 for 34 with the ball to be named Player of the Match.
Chasing 193, the Hurricanes finished on 174 for 8, with Lizelle Lee top-scoring with 57 off 33 balls and Nicola Carey making 32 off 25, while Heather Graham took 2 for 31 for the Hurricanes with the ball.
The Hurricanes had won the toss and chosen to bowl first, but could not chase down the Stars' total despite Lee's quick half-century, as Sutherland's late wickets closed out the win.
