Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 89 off 52 balls powered New Zealand to 198 for 3 in the third T20I at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday, setting India a target of 199 to seal the five-match series.
Mitchell, who had reached his fifty off 26 balls, kept the hosts going after Finn Allen's 40 off 25 and Glenn Phillips' 17, and finished unbeaten alongside Bevon Jacobs, who made 37 not out off 22 balls.
Tim Seifert had fallen early for 2, and a tight final over kept New Zealand just short of 200.
India, who won the toss and chose to bowl first, lead the series 2-0, so a successful chase in Wellington seals the series with two matches still to play.
