Arshdeep Singh gave India the first breakthrough in the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, removing opener Will Young for 9 in the fifth over after India had won the toss and chosen to bowl first.
Young tried to pull a short-of-a-length ball from the left-arm seamer but top-edged it high towards square leg, where Shreyas Iyer settled under it to take the catch, leaving New Zealand 22 for 1.
Tim Seifert, unbeaten on 13, and new batter Henry Nicholls were left to rebuild the innings, with India chasing an early lead in the five-match series after winning the T20I series 3-2.
